Medical Program Assistant (Unit Clerk)
Duties
Provide medical administrative program support and coordination for nursing services in a nursing unit of 40 – 60 members. Act as a key resource person on the nursing unit for recording, maintaining, obtaining, and retrieving records and clinical information to assist nurses, physicians, and all other disciplines responsible for member care. Transcribe physicians’ and nursing orders. Maintain adequate supplies. Serve as unit’s reception point for members, visitors, family, other staff, etc. Coordinate with other departments regarding members’ treatments, diet, diagnostic studies, and records.
Required Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Legal responsibilities and laws governing the transcription of physician orders
- Medical office procedures, including charting and record-keeping
- Patient privacy and confidentiality protocols and regulations such as HIPAA
- Medical symbols, abbreviations, and terminology
- Observation skills
- General office procedures and equipment including those used for typing, filing, copying, transcription, and communication (e.g., telephone, fax, public address system)
- Ability to recognize emergency situations and execute emergency protocols
- Written and verbal communication skills/techniques interacting with members, staff, medical professionals, and the public
- Ability to organize and prioritize information and workload
- Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, database, and specialized software.
Well qualified candidates will have participated in an educational program such as Health Unit Clerk, Medical Assistant, Medical Records Technician or equivalent OR have related medical work experience.
