Resources for Employers
The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) along with the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) will hold a series of seminars to educate employers about the benefits of hiring a veteran and make it easier for employers to connect with and hire veterans.
Under 2011 Wisconsin Act 212, employers may be allowed to claim a Wisconsin tax credit for hiring a veteran with a 50% or greater Federal VA disability rating. The veteran must also have received unemployment insurance benefits at the time of hire and have received an honorable discharge.
The employer claims the credit on its Wisconsin income tax return that is filed with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (WisDOR). For more information, visit the WisDOR website.
In order for the employer to claim the credit, the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs must verify the veteran's disability rating and honorable discharge. To receive this verification, the employer must complete and submit the form WDVA 2640, Certification Request for Veterans Employment Credit. If you have questions about the form or WDVA's role in this process, please contact WDVA's Veterans Benefits Resource Center.
Work Opportunity Tax Credit
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal income tax credit that provides an incentive for private for profit employers to hire individuals of certain target groups, which have traditionally faced significant barriers to employment. These credits reduce an employer's cost of doing business and require little paperwork. Employers can save up to $2,400 per new hire. For the Long-Term Family Assistance recipients, the employer can save up to $9,000 per new hire, over a two year time period.
The Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) program makes employment assistance available to all Wisconsin veterans in local one-stop job centers. The Disabled Veterans' Outreach Program (DVOP) and Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVER) are the two primary programs providing employment and training services to eligible veterans.
Veterans Representatives (DVOPs or LVERs) provide the latest information on local labor markets. They offer workshops and guidance on resume writing, job interviewing skills, and job seeking skills. They also identify training and education needs. They can help veterans make career choices by assessing aptitudes, interests, and abilities through the use of aptitude tests and career counseling.
