Jim Knight

Jim Knight photoJim Knight serves as the Commandant of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. A licensed nursing home administrator for the past twelve years, he has worked in both private and public sector facilities. Prior to administering nursing facilities Jim served as a budget analyst for the Department of Health and Family Services, assigned to the Family Care program.

Jim served six years in the U.S. Air Force upon graduating from college in 1981. With his subsequent graduation from air navigation training, he was assigned to the B-52 aircraft and to K.I. Sawyer AFB in upper Michigan. Upon discharge in 1988 Jim had attained the rank of Captain. In 1991 he completed his Master of Arts degree in Administrative Services from Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

Jim lives in King. His two daughters attend college in their home-state of Michigan.

Nursing Staff

The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is a 721 bed long-term care facility where members live in one of four buildings. Our nursing staff is comprised of a nursing administrator, a director and assistant director of nursing for each building, and a complete array of nurse clinicians, licensed practical nurses, nursing therapy assistants and certified nursing assistants who provide around the clock coverage. Some of the many services provided in the bureau of nursing include:

  • Medication management
  • Follow up with physicians and specialists
  • Assessment
  • Supportive care for members and families
  • Community access
  • In-service training for new nursing techniques and refresher courses
  • Career advancement opportunities for staff
  • Coordination of care team goals
  • Assistance with daily living needs

Social Services Staff

Every member at the Wisconsin Veterans Home is assigned a certified social worker and a resident counselor. Our social services staff maintains a personal relationship with each member and acts as a liaison between the member, other staff services and the members' families.

Dietary Staff

Our director of dietary services, registered dietitians, and a complete food service staff ensure that all meals meet or exceed the individual member’s nutritional necessities. Staff meet regularly with the member food advisory committee to provide regular feedback about meal preferences and opportunities for improvement.

Activities Staff

Each building has an activity therapist and activity therapy assistants who design a specific activities program with and for each member. Activities are normally available seven days per week. Some of the many activities include:

  • Bingo
  • Shopping trips
  • Meal outings
  • Bowling
  • Pocket billiards
  • Card parties
  • Monthly birthday parties
  • Boating and fishing
  • Veterans organization functions
  • Church services
