July 27 is Korean War Armistice Day in Wisconsin
(MADISON) – The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) announces that July 27, 2010 has been designated as Korean War Armistice Day in Wisconsin.
Governor Jim Doyle signed 2009 Wisconsin Act 35, designating July 27 of each year as “Korean War Armistice Day” in observance of the date of the military armistice agreement that ended the Korean War, and requiring the governor to issue a proclamation for the observation of that day, asking the public to contemplate the sacrifices that members of the U.S. armed forces made during the Korean War.
About 132,000 service members from Wisconsin served during the Korean War, with 729 losing their lives. There are over 50,000 Korean War veterans living in Wisconsin today.
The Wisconsin Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Plover, to pay tribute to those Wisconsinites who fought, died and those who are still listed as Missing in Action as a result of the Korean War. To learn more about it, visit www.koreanmemorial.org.
