This ceremony on Purple Heart Day (August 7) will honor Wisconsin veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart for wounds received in armed conflict with an enemy force or while held by an enemy force as a prisoner of war.
The Purple Heart was first established as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York on August 7th, 1782, during the Revolutionary War, as an incentive to the Continental Army.
Each year the Governor proclaims August 7 as Purple Heart Day in Wisconsin. Citizens and state organizations are encouraged to display the American flag on that day as a public expression of the recognition of those individuals who have been wounded or killed in action while serving their nation. |
