The Marine Corps is asking all those who lived or worked at Camp Lejeune in 1987 or earlier to register to receive notifications regarding the drinking water issue.

The Department of the Navy recently sent letters to veterans who were stationed at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina to notify them of toxic chemicals in the drinking water from 1957 to 1987. Veterans who received the letter from the Department of the Navy may visit the VA Camp Lejuene Water Contamination Fact Sheet and visit the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry: Camp Lejeune, North Carolina webpage. The US Marine Corps also have a brochure and webpage at www.marines.mil/clsurvey. The Department of the Navy has a call center staffed Monday through Friday that can be reached toll free at (877) 261-9782.

According to a link from the USMC website, the Department of the Navy is funding two independent research initiatives. The Center for Disease Control's Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry is conducting a study to determine if there is an association between exposure to the water and certain adverse health effects. The National Academy of Sciences is reviewing scientific evidence on associations between adverse health effects and historical data.
